At Sims Engineering Systems ltd, We are mainly known for our special purpose machine building and integrating. All the other sectors we work in have come about from our expertise at this(R&D customers have been impressed with our ability to develop and build unique products and machines that are usually right fist time, which is not what they have been used to ). Most machines we develop and build in very short lead times and quite often we will be building machines while products that the machines are for are still being designed. This means we need to be flexible and incorporate late design changes but still maintain original delivery deadlines. As an example in late 2003 we built a complete bumper assembly line for one of our customers in 16 weeks, this includes the design time. This line incorporated complex ultrasonic welders with built in inspection, punching machines and various assembly machines. Due to the short lead time of the project it was also imperative that everything was right first time.
Most project usually start with the customer giving us a spec of what they need to do with the product, we would then make recommendations of what we feel would be the best solutions and the different associated costs, then together we can come up with the best solution to the problem at hand.
As we are a systems integrator we are quite happy to incorporate several technologies in one machine. For example we can incorporate ultrasonic welding, punching and screw inserting in a single machine. We also have some machines that could loosely be called standard but we are always willing to change the "standard", unlike some of our competitors who will only build one type of machine

This is not a definitive list as we are facing new challenges all the time and will look at any application in any industry sector. Hopefully this will give you an indication to the flexible approach we take to design.
